Our Mission

The Ounce of Prevention Fund invests in the healthy development of at-risk infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. We use an innovative cycle of family-focused programs, research, training, policy analysis and advocacy to help young children succeed in school and throughout life.

We believe that:
  • Children are born learning,
  • High-quality care and education services beginning at birth are necessary to help children enter kindergarten safe, healthy and ready to learn, and
  • Investments in high-quality, early care and education programs for at-risk children yield the highest economic returns

Our Work

The Educare Center of Chicago is a state-of-the-art school open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to serve at-risk children from birth to five years of age. If you are interested in enrolling your child at the Ounce of Prevention Fund Chicago Educare Center please contact the center at 773-924-2334. More information about our Educare Center can be obtained on our web site www.Ounceofprevention.org via the link Enroll My Child. Recruitment of eligible children is happening now! The Ounce has partnered with the Buffett Early Childhood Fund to replicate the Educare model in communities across the country. As part of the Bounce Learning Network, Educare Centers share best practices and serve as catalysts for broader early childhood policy and systems change.

In addition to our Educare Center, we provide Early Head Start programs at other locations in Chicago metropolitan area through partnerships with six community-based organizations.

The Ounce also conducts research, evaluation, training in our Illinois Birth to Three Institute, advocacy through the Kids Public Education and Policy Project and national policy consultation. Finally, through the First Five Years Fund we focus nationwide attention and resources on comprehensive, quality early care and learning programs for children birth to age five.

The FIC Hayes Center serves as an administrative office for Ounce of Prevention Fund Staff. Many of the staff at the Hayes Center work directly with the children, families and staff at the Educare Center providing Literacy, Training, Health, Administrative and Supervisory services to the program.
